The limits of whitening, bonding and veneers for colour, shape and tooth-size problems.
Many patients coming for smile aesthetics start with 'my teeth have yellowed, what should I do?' The right answer depends on whether the problem is colour, shape or spacing. Whitening solves only colour; for shape, size and spaces, restorative methods such as bonding or veneers are needed.
For small chips, gaps and colour spots, composite resin is added to the tooth with minimal or no preparation. It is done in a single session and costs less than veneers (from 3,500 TRY per tooth). It is not as durable as porcelain and can change colour over time.
These are porcelain shells 0.3–0.5 mm thick bonded to the front of the tooth. They solve colour, shape, size and spacing problems together; they resist stains and can last 10–15 years. Because a slight reduction of the tooth surface is needed, reversibility is limited. Patients who grind their teeth (bruxism) are advised to wear a night guard.
Every option has limits, so at the first visit we do a digital smile design and mock-up and show the result in your mouth before treatment starts.
For 48 hours after whitening the teeth are porous; tea, coffee, red wine, cola, tomato sauce and coloured food should be avoided. Smoking should be avoided. For sensitivity, fluoride toothpaste and, if needed, a desensitising gel can be used; the complaint usually passes within 24–48 hours.
Whitening for colour problems, bonding for small flaws and laminate veneers for several problems should come to mind. The mock-up and digital design show which option suits you; the first examination is free.
